Waters family makes big splash

Waters family makes big splash

Mother-daughter duo soar to success on pickleball scene
September 2021

Leigh and Anna Leigh Waters, 14, who are native to Clinton, have made quite a name for themselves in just a short time period while on the professional pickleball scene. Playing for just a handful of years, both have racked up impressive wins and championships as the duo sees their rankings climb.

The Waters duo, along with their father/dad, called Clinton home for the first eight years of Anna Leigh’s life. Six years ago, they departed the area and headed to the Sunshine State. Their pickleball journey began there about three and a half to four years ago. As Hurricane Irma was closing in on Florida, the Waters decided to evacuate to Pennsylvania, where their grandparents resided.

“When we evacuated and went up to Pennsylvania, we started playing pickleball every day for two weeks. Me and my mom just fell in love with it,” said daughter Anna Leigh. “My grandfather really was the one to show us how to play.” (Read More)

The Waynesville branch of the Haywood County Library is showcasing a new collection: The Library of Things.

Medford Branch Library

 JCLS Library of Things

Pickleball is a paddle sport created for all ages and skill levels. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.

A fun sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong.

Played both indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court and a slightly modified tennis net.

Played with a paddle and a plastic ball with holes.

Played as doubles or singles.

In the case (Blue/Black Jackson County Library bag):

Four 7-ply hardwood Diller paddles

6 indoor/outdoor green pickleballs

Launching a Public-Library Affiliated Tool Lending Library

The Library of Things Extended: Launching a Public-Library Affiliated Tool Lending Library

In collaboration with the Hillsboro Public Library, the information problem is how to craft an extension of the current non-traditional collection – the “Library of Things” – into one of the few tool lending libraries affiliated with a public library affiliated. To solve this problem, I assisted from research on waiver verbiage to targeted marketing and strategic planning. I have been on the ground floor of a new community resource, a part of the origin story of a burgeoning force in public libraries, a pivotal opportunity to provide an innovative, yet essential service. The “Library of Things” is a service model expanding libraries’ lending capabilities beyond books. Public libraries embrace and exemplify this emerging feature of the “sharing economy”. Talk of the sharing economy tends to revolve around flashy startups which disrupt markets. Yet public libraries were sharing before it was cool: lending materials to people who, in some sense, collectively own them yet may not otherwise be able to afford them. The sharing service model evokes a sense of community, resonates with cultivating genuine connections and lasting engagement.
